wing

Walking down the sidewalk and stumbling upon a bird scooter got old quickly. The benefits that micro mobility at that level brought to society were noticeable, but in a way where it was impossible to take three steps in any direction and not trip over those wheels and plastic. The hazard was enough for people to move on from them quickly, especially with Wing coming into the picture. Speaking of which, I’m about to be late to work and the M train suddenly stopped running because of a medical emergency so now I’m back on the streets in Lower East side at 8:47 in the morning when I needed to be in the office 3 minutes ago and Uber is no longer a thing because of the outlawing of autonomous vehicles. Wing and then Starbucks. Couldn’t pull my phone out faster, clicked on Wing, tap, swipe, tap - *Your wing is 2 minutes away!* but man that’s not fast enough and it’s cold (mostly in relation to the subway’s heat). What is that guy staring at? Seems like he’s in the same situation as me is he talking- “It’s like we’re back in middle school waiting for our parents.” Interesting. There’s my Wing, or maybe it’s his nope it’s mine okay AirPod XRs in, handlocks in, validated grip tension, and there’s the propellers and now I’m significantly colder- we’re off. There’s something peaceful about being above the ground-level noise of Manhattan during this Tuesday morning commute. There’s a subtle feeling that would suggest the concept of collective voyeurism, but I need to focus on getting to work because any moment spent not focused on getting to work is a moment that contributes to me being more late. Part of me wishes that I could drive this Wing myself, I heard that if you work for Wing you get that perk. Would never work for them though. Honestly it’s a great idea and it’s helped convenience and commerce in so many ways, but Wing’s monetization strategy really diminished the aesthetic beauty of cities in my opinion. After people everywhere started downloading the Wing app and using the Drones to get around, Wing began to buy the adspace on the sides of buildings. They got major pushback as the OLED screens would block everybody’s priceless views, but that’s at precisely the same moment that Wing announced their acquisition of Ventana INC, the mysterious company turned startup fantasy company (the likes of Athena) that pioneered the technology of one-way holographic interfaces. A company has never grown as fast. Skylines changed over night. Cities became living projectors for advertisements and targeted content subscription models. Merging this technology with the Vedia AR chips brought it all into the digital world and the city returned to it’s seemingly natural state, but only to those without the chips. It was, in my opinion, one of the most brilliant freemium plays ever. Okay now just getting to the landing zone, perfect.
Shit, I forgot to put in my Starbucks order.
